freedom of assuming the best

Dear Lucille,

People are generally good. Even when ugliness rears its head in one's behavior, it is likely a product of heartache and scars we cannot see. At the core of most individuals you will encounter, there is a hunger for joy, and a thirsting to love and be loved by others. Assume that the good (and the bad) character traits folks carry have come from an untold number of adversities and sorrows they have passed through--and that they are still likely to be navigating these challenges in one way or another.

Be generous in the grace you extend others. Assume the best in the people you encounter, and you will be free.

Love,

Daddy
