we were just kids, running fast and running free,
not a dollar to our name, no responsibility.
lovin you was easy, lovin you was right
every minute with you, like a blind man findin sight.
so we told em all “why wait? let’s get this started!”
and the world just frowned,
they said “you’re both too young,
boy, you had better slow it down.’
maybe they were right, but so was i.
so i took your hand…
and you smiled…
i said:
“girl let’s hurry this up so we can slow it down,
let’s start our life and get out of this town.
cause time with you goes by too fast
let’s soak it all up and make this thing last,
rich or poor,
pauper or crown,
baby, we got forever…
and we on this ride together…
let’s hurry up and slow it down.”
they say time waits for no one, and i guess they tell it right,
we were workin hard all day, crying babies keepin us up all night.
responsibilities piled up, more mouths to feed had changed the game,
studying books and taking extra jobs, but the players remained the same.
my mama said “soak it up now son, they grow up much too fast.’
so we took each other‘s hands, just like we always had.
and you smiled:
“boy, let’s hurry this up so we can slow it down,
this new world we made is turning fast around.
cause these tiny babes are growin much too fast
let’s soak it all up and make this thing last.
and If their cries keep us up all night,
listen honey, it will all be alright.
yeah, we got forever…
and we on this ride together…
let’s hurry up and slow it down.”
and when we’re old and tired, tellin all the stories they heard before.
when our hair turns gray.
and our bodies ache,
we’ll tell em all once more.
cause our babies will all be grown…
with babies of their own…
i’ll take your hand and watch you smile…yeah we’ll tell em all once more:
“hurry up and slow it all down,
hold onto the love and the friendships you found.
life is a gift, take the hands of the people you treasure.
cause with all its adventures, there ain’t nothin better.
time flies either way,
so keep up, love hard, and pray.
yeah you got forever…
and you’re on this ride together….
hurry up and slow it down.
hurry up and slow it down.
hb mercy
(family pic on a timer at our beach. life with kids is mostly a beautiful chaos. best to slow it down when able.)
